Tile: A Variety of Eco-Friendly Options

Man made tile is an easy way to go eco-friendly in the home.  Everything from the materials from which the tiles are eco-friendly-tile-no4-verde1comprised to the manufacturing process to the installation can go green and help meet LEED requirements.  Man made tiles can be produced from recycled materials, either waste from other tiles or industrial leftover from glass or other products.

Not only is  tile inherently eco-friendly because of its recycled make-up, but it is has a myriad of other indirectly green advantages.  It has an extremely long life and does not have to be replaced often, it is recyclable, does not contain VOC’s, and absorbs very little water which prevents molding and deterioration.  Eco-friendly tile does not release or absorb harmful contaminants and can be cleaned using only water which means that there are less pollutants released into the environment from cleaning supplies.

When choosing an eco-friendly tile, there is an endless supply of attractive options.  There are solid ceramic tiles, tiles that resemble natural stone, recycled glass, crystal clear tile, opaque tile… anything you can imagine, can most likely be located.  Whether you are renovating your bathroom, installing a kitchen backsplash, or looking for a durable flooring for your entryway, man made tile is a great option that is both green and beautiful.

It is also worth noting that natural tiles can be considered eco-friendly as well, as it can be quarried locally using methods that reduce the carbon footprint of the manufacturing process.
